Wolverine Week-4-in-Review: Frank Tieri Returns

As previously mentioned, I plan to announce some nifty changes to the weekly Wolverine Files experience later tonight, but before that unveiling, let’s get to jrpbsp and his surprisingly positive review of ‘Wolverine Origins’ #44 (details)…

Wolverine has two other major appearances this week with ‘Wolverine: Wendigo!’ #23 (preview), reprinting Frank Tieri’s “Wolverine: Wendigo!” and “Wolverine vs. Thor’ from Marvel Digital Comics, and ‘X-Force’ #23 (preview), a confusing but satisfying continuation of the “X-Necrosha” storyline…

As for minor appearances, ‘Captain America: Reborn’ #6 (preview) features a Wolverine cover only cameo…

Finally, in non-continuity appearances, Wolverine has a humorous role in ‘Marvel Adventures Spider-Man’ #59 (preview), a separate continuity from all previous Marvel Adventure appearances, and a painful appearance in ‘X-Babies’ #4 (preview), thankfully the final issue in the miniseries…

Wolverine Week-3-in-Review: Changes A-Comin’

This upcoming weekend I hope to unveil some nifty changes to the weekly Wolverine Files experience, but in the meantime, let’s get to jrpbsp and his review of the ‘Insane in the Brain’ story finale in ‘Wolverine: Weapon X’ #9 (details).

Wolverine’s other major appearance comes in ‘Uncanny X-Men’ #520 (preview) as Wolverine hunts down the last Predator X in the sewers of New York City…

As for Wolverine’s minor appearances, ‘Dark Avengers’ #15 (preview) features a brief one-panel Wolverine flashback cameo…

…and surprisingly, Wolverine only graces the cover in Incredible Hercules #140 (preview)…

Wolverine Week-2-in-Review: Psylocke Rocks

Jrpbsp starts off Wolverine Week 2: 2010, with a rousing review of the penultimate issue of ‘Uncanny X-Men: First Class’ (details).

Make sure not to miss ‘Psylocke’ #3 (preview) as the mini series kicks into high gear with a fascinating Wolverine appearance that delves into his vendetta against Matsu’o Tsuraya over the death of Mariko…

‘Nation X’ #2 (preview) features a brief one-page Wolverine cameo in the Gambit short story, ‘Cajun Justice!’…

…and Wolverine has an even briefer cameo in flashback form in X-Men Forever #15 (preview)…

…finally I should note that ‘Wolverine’ does appear in the kids comic Marvel Super Hero Squad #1 (preview)…

Wolverine Week-1-in-Review: Start the Year Off with a Whimper

A light week for Wolverine appearances, so let’s kick it off with…

…a brief money-losing appearance for Wolverine in ‘Nation X: X-Factor’ #1 (preview)…

…followed by ‘X-Men Noir: Mark of Cain’ #2 (preview) with a drunkingly noir-ish Logan showing up for a mere single panel…

…there is NO Wolverine appearance in the mega ‘Dark Reign’ follow-up, Siege #2 (preview), a somewhat disappointing redux of ‘Civil War’…

…finally, Wolverine did appear in two previous ‘What If? stories (thanks to Comusiv for the heads up), ‘What If? Spider-Man House of M’ (preview) and ‘What If? Daredevil vs. Elektra’ (preview)…

FYI, jrpbsp’s review of ‘New Mutants’ #9 and the latest chapter of the X-Necrosha storyline will run later in the week.

Wolverine Week-52-in-Review: Better Late Than Never

Still playing catch up with the comics from over the holidays, so let’s start with the jrpbsp reviews…

  • ‘Wolverine: Weapon X’ #8 (review): Brain Power…
  • ‘Wolverine: Origins’ #43 (review): Swords and Schemes…
  • ‘Uncanny X-Men’ #519 (review): A Beastly Exit (sans Wolverine)…
  • ‘X-Men Legacy’ #231 (review): Reality Shift (Wolverine on cover only)…
  • ‘New Mutants’ #8 (review): Universal Language (sans Wolverine)…

As for other Wolverine appearances from the holidays, Wolverine guest starred in the “Assault on New Olympus” storyline from ‘Incredible Hercules’ #139 (preview). On that note, I should mention that Wolverine had a cameo on the final page of the ‘Assault on New Olympus’ One Shot (preview) that kicked off the storyline back in November…

Wolverine also appeared in a rather uninspiring ‘What If? Astonishing X-Men’ (preview), as a single-panel vision in ‘X-Men Forever’ #14 (preview) and on the cover only of ‘New Avengers’ #60 (preview)…

Wolverine Week-51-in-Review: Astonishing X-Force

  • ‘X-Force’ #22 (review): Lost Knife…
  • ‘Astonishing X-Men’ #33 (review): Getting Ahead…
  • ‘X-Men Forever’ #13 (review): Mutant Eat Mutant (sans Wolverine)…

As we had a light week, let me mention that Dark Wolverine (Daken) appears in Dark Wolverine #81, Dark Avengers #12 and Mighty Avengers #32

Wolverine-Week-50-in-Review: Deadpool Noir X

We have several major and a boatload of minor Wolverine appearance from last week, so let’s start with the jrpbsp reviews…

  • ‘Wolverine: Under the Boardwalk (review): Where the Bodies Are Buried…
  • ‘Uncanny X-Men: First Class’ #6 (review): Knight War…
  • ‘X-Men Forever’ #13 (review): Black Kitty (sans Wolverine)…

As for the other Wolverine appearances of the week…

Deadpool #18 (preview)
Writer: Daniel Way
Penciler: Paco Medina
Inker: Juan Vlasco

Daniel Way wraps up another rather amusing Deadpool story with Wolverine and the X-Men.

Not quite as funny as his ‘Wolverine: Origins’ appearance, but I have to admit that Domino and the rooster was pretty damn humorous…

Nation X #1 (preview)
Writer: James Asmus
Art: Michael Allred

In a collection of four short stories, Wolverine cameos in two and takes center stage with Nightcrawler in another.

That stage is “Road Trip!”, a rather off beat, funny and surprisingly well done short story…

X-Men Noir: Mark of Cain #1 (preview)
Writer: Fred Van Lente
Art: Dennis Calero

Like the first X-Men Noir series, ‘Mark of Cain’ starts off with a very strong first issue.

One hopes, however, that this series will end stronger and with less confusion than the last one…

Wolverine also has several brief cameos in a slew of comics…

  • New Avengers Annual #3: Wolverine appears in a Clint Barton vision…
  • Dark X-Men #2: Wolverine appears in a Nathan Grey vision…
  • Necrosha: The Gathering: Wolverine and the X-Men appears on television…
  • Spider-Man & The Secret Wars #1: Wolverine appears in a Secret Wars recap…
  • Marvel 70th Anniversary Frame Art: The Wolverine covers are reprinted in full…

Wolverine Week-49-in-Review: Incredible Psylocke

We have two major and one minor Wolverine appearance from last week, as well as a fun Wolverine sighting that I missed from the previous week..

Let’s start with the jrpbsp reviews…

  • ‘Wolverine: First Class’ #21 (review): Disarmed…
  • ‘Uncanny X-Men’ #518 (review): Mental Games (sans Wolverine)…

As for the other Wolverine appearances of the week…

Psylocke #17 (preview)
Writer: Chris Yost
Pencils: Harvey Tolibao
Inks: Paul Neary and Sandu Florea

I am thoroughly enjoying this miniseries, much to my surprise, as I have never really been a fan of Psylocke. But Chris Yost deftly retells the history of the character in a way that actually makes sense while moving the character forward.

Wolverine does cameo, and his visit to Mariko’s grave makes me appreciate this series all the more…

What If Secret Invasion (preview)
Writer: Kevin Grevioux & Karl Bollers
Pencils: Pow Rodrix
Paints: Frank Martin

Wolverine briefly appears in this disappointing What If.

By the way, I have a What If idea of my own.

What If Marvel wrote What Ifs as if the altered circumstance actually transpired in the Marvel Universe, instead of creating these horrible Twilight Zone episodes all the time?

Incredible Hercules #138 (preview)
Writer: Greg Pak & Fred Van Lente
Art: Rodney Buchemi

Took me a week to track down this fun-filled epic assault on New Olympus.

And let me tell you, it was certainly worth it.

The New Avengers (and Wolverine) are a hoot as they follow the lunatic lead of Hercules.

If you are looking for a zany change of pace story, I strongly recommend you check this one out…

Wolverine Week-48-in-Review: Dark Rulk

We have three major Wolverine appearances from last week, as well as a Dark Wolverine sighting.

Let’s start with the jrpbsp reviews…

  • ‘Wolverine: First Class’ #21 (review): Kitty’s Final Lesson…
  • ‘Uncanny X-Men’ #517 (review): Swimming with Predators…
  • ‘New Mutants’ #7 (review): Lost in Translation (sans Wolverine)…
  • ‘X-Men Forever’ #12 (review): Dark Magik…

As for the other Wolverine appearances of the week…

Hulk #17 (preview)
Writer: Jeph Loeb
Pencils: Ian Churchill
Inks: Mark Farmer

More of the same from Jeph Loeb and Ian Churchill, though Wolverine only cameos for three pages.

While I can’t recommend this book, I would be interested to hear from folks who have been reading it on a regular basis to see what merits this book does have…

Dark Wolverine #80 (preview)
Writer: Daniel Way & Marjorie Liu
Pencils: Stephen Segovia & Paco Diaz Luque
Inks: Sandu Florea, Guillermo Ortego & Jay Leisten

This series started with such promise, but has become so overly complex, manipulative and maddeningly ambiguous that I am really looking forward to it moving into its final stages. Though I should note that Wolverine does cameo in passing.

Again, I would love to hear from fans of this book to see what it is that I am missing…

Finally, I should note the ‘Wolverine and the X-Men’ completed its first season with a rousing three-part finale, Foresight. Some truly terrific storytelling with a cliffhanger that promises a fun second season.

Wolverine-Week-47-in-Review: Dark Weapon X Origins Legacy

We have two major Wolverine appearances from last week, as well as a brief cameo and a Dark Wolverine sighting.

Let’s start with the jrpbsp reviews…

  • ‘Wolverine: Weapon X’ #7 (review): Head Games…
  • ‘Wolverine: Origins’ #42 (review): Out of Character on Purpose…
  • ‘X-Men Legacy’ #229 (review): Stinging Attack…

As for the Dark Wolverine sighting…

Dark Avengers #11 (preview)
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Art: Mike Deodato
Painted Pages: Greg Horn

A genuinely fascinating issue surrounding the infinite powers of Molecule Man, but it certainly feels like a detour from the Dark Reign storyline.

Which would be fine if this weren’t the primary title for the aforementioned storyline.
