“The Adamantium Men, Part 1”
Writer: Jason Aaron
Artist: Ron Garney

The 22-page first issue of the new Wolverine series that Marvel has been hyping for months hit the stands this week.

The first eight pages are spent in fairly standard fashion setting up the plot of this five-part opening storyline.

The next seven pages show, again in fairly standard fashion, how much of a badass Wolverine is and ostensibly introduces a reporter to the cast.

And the final seven pages are devoted to Wolverine researching the bad guys with the help of a de-powered Maverick.

All in all, a fairly tame issue that sets the groundwork for Jason Aaron’s run.

Perhaps unfairly, I was expecting more, though Ron Garney’s art certainly does not disappoint.

All in all, a decent first issue.

I agree that this issue wasn’t bad but it also wasn’t anything great either. I liked the dynamic between Logan and Maverick but thought the scene on the subway was kinda same old same old. I’m also not sure what I think of the raver glowstick Wolverine claws.. But I’ll def check out the next issue because I have a fair amount of faith in this creative team (I really did like the Get Mystique arc). Hopefully it’ll be better than that Manifest Destiny miniseries.

What I admire most about Jason Aaron is his passion to tell original Wolverine stories that set up new canon. Or perhaps more accurately, his strive to create new plots that have little to do with pre existing canon.

In the interviews posted on this site, Aaron isn’t afraid to experiment with new genres for Logan. That makes me really happy, because Wolverine is a character that doesn’t need to be restrained by the ground work that has came before. Perhaps we’ll get that breath of fresh air that some of us wanted for a long time.
