Wolverine Week-05-in-Review: First Class, X-Force, New Avengers

Wolverine “appeared” in four titles this week (January 28, 2009), but the bigger news was the release of ‘Hulk vs. Wolverine on DVD’ (see news and my review) as well as the ‘Wolverine and the X-Men’ animated series (news/open thread and my review) on NickToons (new episode tonight at 8pm!).

Oh, and the beta launch of the Wolverine Files Forums

But on with the reviews of a rather weak week for Wolverine…

“The Pack, Part II”
Writer: Fred Van Lente
Artist: Hugo Petrus

I’m usually a big fan of Fred Van Lente and ‘Wolverine: First Class’ in general.

But this Werewolf-Wolverine storyline is genuinely dreadful.

Neat concept. Poor execution.

Hopefully Van Lente’s final issue will go out on a better note…

“Who the Hell Is Eli Bard?”
Writers: Craig Kyle & Christopher Yost
Art: Alina Urusov & Clayton Crain

Oh my God is this one boring.

Even the characters in the story get bored with the story of Eli Bard.

Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Pencils: Billy Tan; Inks: Matt Banning

Excellent story. I don’t like the twist, but excellent story nonetheless.

And Wolverine does appear, albeit briefly, setting the stage for a big showdown with the Dark Avengers…

  1. If Proof of Osborn insanity was needed, then his recruitment of Darken is it. At least make sure you know who your guys are working for. Romulus is still out there (along with Cypher) and wouldn’t bet either of them isn’t involved.
Oh And Wolverine is going to kill you!

  2. I don’t think Norman is making a wise choice with Daken. Has anyone heard that Wolverine will turn into Daken’s book after Old Man Logan is finished? I have been hearing this lately and wondered if its true.

  3. Wolverine also made a completely unnecessary appearance in X-Men: Worlds Apart that makes a completist like me groan.

He also appeared in Spider-man: Extra in a story that probably shouldn’t had been in a Spider-man comic. The story does have a fault or two to it but it actually turned out to be a really good read.

Thought you all should know in case you haven’t already grabbed your copies.

  4. They don’t even care about continuity anymore, which is why I don’t spiral into a Nerd Rage like everyone else. It’s impossible for Logan to appear in as many books as he does. Yet they just keep shoveling him into more and more books. So currently canon doesn’t mean anything, and I’m not going to freak out about it anymore.

The Daken thing is just a rumor, nothing has been posted on it yet.
